Restaurant Review: Café do Brasil
On a beautiful fall day, my husband Joe and I set out for a taste of Rio’s Carnival. We weren’t in Rio but we got to experience it through our tastebuds. If you are seeking a party atmosphere, Café do Brasil offers the Bosa Nova Bar with music and a DJ for your enjoyment, Thursday–Saturday.
The tastes of Brazil, like those of the United States, vary by region. Staples of the country include black beans, rice, and garlic. Whether you prefer poultry, pork, fish, of beef, you’ll find something pleasing.
Café do Brasil has a bright, fresh feel with yellow walls and white tablecloths topped with fresh flowers. It’s so appealing, you may want to stay and visit awhile.
The menu includes a variety of quiches and savory pies. We started our meal by sharing a piece of Brazilian pie ($4.25), which is stuffed with layers of ham, mozzarella cheese, and spinach, then topped with garlic and onions. It was a large, thick slice and very filling.
I went out of my comfort zone when I ordered the Brazilian mufalleta ($7.25), with layers of turkey, ham, lettuce, and tomato, topped with relish on a crusty baguette. A mufalleta usually has an olive relish, but this one has eggplant, onion, garlic, and bell peppers. It tasted great and had a flavorful heat to it, which I always enjoy. A green salad with almonds, mandarin oranges, and vinaigrette came with the sandwich and made for a large and tasty lunch.
Joe ordered the chicken stroganoff ($6.95), a large plate of grilled chicken strips and mushrooms flambéed in cognac and light cream, with Roma tomatoes served over a bed of rice and topped with crunchy potato sticks. It had good flavor but could have used a little more chicken.
Luckily, Joe doesn’t feel the need to always have his own dessert, so we ended our meal by sharing an order of flan ($2.25), a caramel–topped custard. This flan was a little more grainy than other flan I have had in the past.
I would consider this a restaurant more for adults than children, but kids with adventurous tastes may enjoy it too.
Take a taste of Brazil home with you if you don’t have time to dine in; the 21 varities of whole quiche ($15.00) can be ordered by 3pm the day before you need it.
